2009!!! Wow! It is here already. It seems like yesterday that we were having fun in the summer sun. OK, not yesterday. After the blizzard that swept through in December, we in the north land know that the New Year brings more of the same. Nevertheless, we also know it means time to break out the snow blowers, shovels, rock salt, and of course, the snowmobiles. Winter has never slowed down the people of the Northern Midwest, and 2009 should not be any different. The Great Outdoors will be plodding along entertaining the masses. Hope to see y’all somewhere this month.

Also This Month

With the New Year comes promises of improvement for oneself. Resolutions that we make with every intention of success, and most of us fail miserably to keep. Not to worry. There is always next year. For those of us that plan on making (and keeping) resolutions, here is some advice.

  1. Make resolutions with the knowledge that you are human, and have limitations. If you can’t cure cancer, don’t reslove to cure cancer. Make reasonable goals like "I resolve to see The Great Outdoors band perform at least twice a month whenever they are within a 100 mile radius!" This should aid in your resolution success.
  2. Make it publicly known. Scream it from the rooftops! Tell everyon you know. This way your friends can support and encourage you. It will also give them something to tease you about when you give up the notion of losing weight, drinking less, being kinder to others, drinking less, saving money, drinking less, stop smoking…did I mention drinking less?
  3. Keep a check on your progress. If you are trying to lose weight, jot down your scale readings every so often. If you are trying to drink less alcohol, well, I am not sure how to keep track of something as insane as that, but you get the gist of it all. Sometimes, a little positive reinforcement goes a long way.
  4. Most importantly, when you decide to cheat, be discreet. Hide out in a closet while wolfing down that extra doughnut, or having that emergency cigarette. When asked if you have strayed from your resolution, DENY! DENY! DENY! Remember, you are only human, and as a human, eventual failure is a given. Fear not, you can always start again.

The Great Outdoors would like to wish all who endeavor to better themselves through New Years Resolutions the very best of luck. Great things can be accomplished, so get to it.

Also this month is the Kings, Mr. Elvis Presley, birthday. We here at Great Outdoors central wish the King, at whatever Burger King he is hiding in now, a happy 74th. Martin Luther King Jr. day is on the 19th, and on January 20th, we inaugurate the first African American President in US history. Washington D.C. will be absolutely jam packed for the event.

Other than these few happenings, January will be mostly about staying warm and having fun in the snow. The Great Outdoors will be starting the year in Superior, WI, and will be hitting Grand Forks, ND, and Park Rapids, MN. We really hope to see you sometime.
