The Great Outdoors head to Park Rapids, MN Friday evening for a night at the Eagle’s Club. Saturday the band heads to Downer, MN to the Mainline Bar & Grill. We would love to see y’all there.

February 2009 brings to the stage a groundhog, two presidential birthdays, and of course, Valentines Day. We’ve had a wild wintery ride these past couple of months. Half a week of tolerable cold, followed by a weekend of blizzard conditions. It seems like this has been the pattern since December. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a more stable month of weather.

This month, February 2nd, we find out how much more winter is in our future. For those who don’t know how Groundhog Day works, if a groundhog, most notably Punxsutawyney Phil, emerges from its burrow and fails to see its shadow because the weather s cloudy, winter will soon end. If it is sunny and the groundhog does see its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for 6 more weeks.

In the month following the inauguration of our 44th president, we celebrate the birthdays of two past presidents. Abe Lincoln was born Feb. 12, 1809, and George Washington on Feb. 22, 1732. Washington’s Birthday is the original name of Presidents Day, celebrated the 3rd Monday in February. Presidents Day was started to honor both Washington and Lincoln’s birthday. Several states still designate separate dates for these celebrations. In addition to honoring two of the greatest men to hold the office of Presidetn, these holidays also mean good bargains in the retail stores. Go get some bargains.

Valentines Day, or Saint Valentines Day is on February 14th. I am sure that most women don’t need to be reminded of the event, so this announcement is for the fellas. This day, declare your love to your lady by spending ridiculous amounts of money on greeting cards, and of course, jewelry. No expense is too much. The woman in your life will appreciate it, and you may very well have bought yourself another year of guys night out, and Monday night football. Proper planning will ensure your place in the relationship. Good luck.

The Great Outdoors

This weekend, I filled in for Brad Wilson with Avalanche at Pistol Pete’s in West Fargo, ND. I had myself a grand old time. This group is a lot of fun, and talented too. We started Thursday night as usual at Pistol Pete’s. If you have never seen this exciting band, I highly recommend it. The band consists of Kevin on bass and vocals, Lynne on vocals, Kacie on drums and vocals, Brad on keys, guitar and vocals, Jim on lead guitar and vocals, and last but certainly not least, utility man Nick on steel guitar, guitar, vocals, and banjo.

I must send out a get well to Brad. I enjoyed helping out, but the band just ain’t the same without you. And thanks to the rest of the guys…and gals, for including me in the festivities. I truly had a blast. Best of luck.
